Putting the " ' " in O'Bama

Friday night after the kids and I watched a movie (Princess Bride, for those who care), I flipped on PBS which was running the last third of the Gershwin Prize show and presentation at The White House. As I sat back and enjoyed the lineup of performers delivering their renditions of favorite Stevie Wonder tunes, I felt so glad to have a POTUS again with a soul, and some groove to boot. On Saturday I got an email from my friend Earl of Ohio announcing the AMAZING news that John Doyle and Liz Carroll will be performing at The White House on March 17.

Green is cool.

Nice to have a music lover in the White House! Carroll/Doyle - great choice for St. Patty's.

Late braking news:

John Doyle has finished his tour with Joan Baez and another Tim O'Brien collaborator, Scott Nygaard has replaced him. (Is Tim getting some sort of vigorish for this service?)

John has a series of dates with Liz Carroll and/or Greenfields of America.

The St. Patrick's Day gig for the President has been moved from the White House to the U.S. Capitol building in order to accommodate the expected crowd.

Turns out there are two interesting "back stories" here. Although they are both very "inside baseball." One might recall that unlike his predecessors, The Shrub only ever held one of these St. Patrick's Day celebrations. A reporter from RTE (The Irish TV network) had the nerve to ask him some non-softball questions. End of St. Pat's celebrations.

LĂșnasa was offered this gig but was already committed to a date in New Mexico so they had to pass. But liz and John are the perfect fit. First, they're incredible. Second, Liz is the child of immigrants and john is an immigrant. Third, Liz is from Chicago and has been a big Obama supporter all along. See:

Oh my gosh. Scott Nygaard is cool but he's no John Doyle! I didn't even make the Chicago-Liz connection until you mentioned it -- DUH. I took a pass on the show Sat; Kent is one place to go alone, Playhouse Square another.
:-(

Liz and John will do a glorious high-stepping job. I'm so happy that they have this amazing opportunity!! And the kids are ALREADY asking about Irish Fest '09--the duo is missed!
